Advent 2017

15th December

Luke 1:63-66, 80

He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s surprise he wrote, “His name is John.” Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God.

Awe fell upon the whole neighborhood, and the news of what had happened spread throughout the Judean hills. Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and asked, “What will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way.

John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.

"By this question, and by that concluding reference to the child's life in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance, Luke's story forces us to contemplate what the child, in fact, became: John the Baptist, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord!'"

As John, who cried 'Prepare' to Israel, was the messenger of that first appearing, so john is the messenger now of the reappearing, the Second coming of Christ!
Still, still he cries: 'Prepare!'
Are we listening?
 W. Wangerin Jnr,  Preparing for Jesus

Although similar to an earlier piece, I wanted to bring the empty manger into a more modern setting, inspired by the final question from the author of the Devotional.

Advent 2016 - Day 23, 19th December

Advent Day 23

These words are taken from the Advent hymn The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns and, again, fitted nicely with my day's readings.

Mark 10:45: For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Advent 2016, 4th December, Day 8

Advent Day 8
I think the great outdoors is the best place to find peace and focus on what's important...a snowy great outdoors is even better IMO! The words are taken from the Advent hymn My Soul in Stillness Waits.

Take Me Deeper 2016 - DNA - Week 45 - 4th November

TMD 2016 - DNA - Week 45 - 4th November - I am Blessed to be a Blessing

Wonderful devotional that really made me think :)

I loved the passage from Rick Warren's book:
"The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose."

It seemed to me we sometimes need to get back to basics. Stop worrying about the big stuff and make sure we take care of the little things that can make such a difference to us all.

Matthew 10:29 came to mind: Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care.

Symbolically, feeding the birds is a small thing to do but has great impact when we do that! If we can perhaps free ourselves from worrying about the big things - or at least from letting those things take over our minds and hearts - and focus on little things we can do well with great love, everything else will follow.

I think perhaps the US election fever and the reactions that we can't seem to escape atm on social media and mainstream played a subconscious part in my thinking today! The results of a whole nation voting can't be changed and people seem to feel helpless, but there is a lot that we all can do in making the world a better place where we are. Let's just start there and see where we're led...? Be blessed by being a blessing to others.

Advent Day 12 - 10th December 2015 - Surprised by love

The Music was Winter Snow by Chris Tomlinson. I really wanted to capture the feel of snow falling, the silence, the peace, the gentleness.

Advent Day 9 - 7th December - I Wonder As I Wander

This was another digital paper of mine, to which I added a load of brushwork, made a composite and then digitally painted.
