"Nevertheless She Persisted: Sadness" - A Series Is Born!

Following on from my 'angry' piece the other day, I decided it might be fun to create a little series, expressing different emotions. The angry piece was in warm tones, red typically representing anger; this piece I've done in blues to represent sadness. There's something about those eyes though that says strength and defiance through the sadness. That first piece will now be called "Nevertheless She Persisted: Anger."

To the sad lady, I added flowers to represent the beauty and harmony of women :) as described by the Pope in the previously linked article :) Then I added a representation of the crown of thorns - for the sacrifices women worldwide make both in what they do and in what they are not permitted to do. There are scratches and drips of blood from the thorns - scars that may never fade. The background is rather chaotic as society, both within the RCC and without, fight for this cause or that, trying to make the world a better place - and yet it doesn't happen fast enough, if at all.

Perhaps a dark piece, or perhaps a positive piece after all - to me the woman is strong in her sadness!! She's not overcome - yet!

(I've reposted some of the words I used before as they are the standard).

The Greatest Gift

I created this as part of my training in my PhotoArtistry course. I'm not posting them all on here, as this blog is more for my Faith Art, but this piece is appropriate! (If you'd like to see more of my training pieces, you can find them on Flickr or on my ArtBoja site).

I think my subconscious was looking ahead a tad to Advent and Christmas - Mary, contemplating what is ahead for her and what it will mean for the world.

Take Me Deeper 2016 - DNA - Week 10 - 4th March

TMD 2016 - DNA - Week 10 - 4th March - I Am Alive in the Spirit

I read the suggested passages for going deeper, Acts 4:23-31, and of it all, the final words really struck a chord with me..."After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness."

I really wanted to portray the feeling of the Holy Spirit not simply 'coming upon' someone, but living within them, working within them, and the feeling of power, as talked about in the devotional, that would bring.

I almost felt scared to start this piece..no idea why! Almost a blocked feeling but I pushed on through and it came together quite quickly! Then I had to leave it. I had finished everything bar the digital painting. I was so tempted to leave it as it was, lol, but decided to have a go at painting it, expecting it to be hard and take an absolute age. But it actually was done pretty quickly and easily! Yay!!

Take Me Deeper 2016 - DNA - January 15th - Chosen by God

As I sit here writing this post, the wind is howling outside and there is a chance of snow! My daughters and I stayed up rather late last night to see if the snow previously promised for the early hours of Friday materialised! Had it started to fall, my youngest daughter and I would have been out in the garden taking photos lol! Can you tell it's a rare event nowadays that we get snow in my part of the UK?!

Sadly the snow didn't come so we went to bed hoping for a nice surprise when we woke. I overlaid of course, but was still up by 6.15am, but alas, no snow still!
So hubby and I sit and have a quiet coffee with the wind howling and the temperature a lot colder than of late and prepare to face the day. I'm still hoping for even just a little sprinkling of snow though!!
Take Me Deeper - DNA - 15th January 2016 - Chosen By God
I love Ephesians 2:10 - For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Also John 15:16 - You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit - fruit that will last - and so that whatever you ask in my name the father will give you.
I hope this piece gives a feel of being chosen, appointed! I've decided to stick with the digital painting as long as it works out and I have the time. This piece really wanted to be yellowy lol! I tried to make it more red but it wasn't having it!

Take Me Deeper - September Week 2

What a difference we're seeing here in the UK as Autumn creeps ever closer! The mining bees are now out in our garden in full force, resulting in a retreat by all of us, even the dog! The mornings see a bit of a nip in the air, but our days this week have been wall to wall blue skies and sunshine!
I followed one of Diane Marra's videos yesterday, having bought some watercolour crayons a week or so ago after seeing her working with them, and have made a couple of backgrounds for pages! I really enjoyed myself!! So there IS life after digi lol! It's years since I last used paint/paper/glue and it was so much fun!
I'm rather inspired at present by what my youngest daughter (who is home educated) and I are seeing under our new microscope! The patterns that we never knew existed within nature as they're usually invisible to the naked eye are so captivating, I'm seriously thinking of buying another microscope for myself that can attach to my PC, and then using the images to create some digital papers/elements! They'd definitely be unique lol!

For now though, here are my artwork and my thoughts for this week's devotionals - very timely and apt considering my situation at present!
September Week 2 - The Promise of Forgiveness
This was very timely for me and I came back to it three times to re-read! From the reading I did I gleaned that God promises us forgiveness, but it is conditional upon our response. It is our choice to forgive and the Holy Spirit will help us.
I read John 6:37 - "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out" - whoever = anyone; He turns nobody away.
And 1 Peter 5:7 - Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
I wanted to encompass a feeling of freedom that can come from our forgiving, and also the blessings that can come from that. I wanted the piece to feel personal, with a real sense that we are cared for.
So, I used a solitary figure, alone on the hillside, 'coming to the Father', and the white light 'spots' around her are representing the blessings flowing from her forgiving another. There is a wispy smoke-effect raising heavenward, representing both the Holy Spirit helping her, but also the freedom she is gaining through her actions.
I kept to my personal little challenge and used the same 5 textures, just in a different order and with different blend modes. I like how the piece has the same feel as last week's piece but is different!
I used CU textures and brushes, and one of the HKC digital shapes.

Take Me Deeper - September Week 1

Here we are again! This past week has seen the end of the school summer holidays, and the end of the day-on-day sunshine as well! We took our rabbits to a 'bunny-whisperer', and ascertained once and for all that these two brothers, who were once so close won't ever be able to go in the same hutch or run again. It's very sad, and all because they have had to be separated for 6 weeks following their castration ops which, shall we say, didn't go as they should have, and the ensuing complications and additional operations forced the separation. However, as they are not miserable being in separate accommodation but together in the same space, so they can sit right by each other, the lady agreed that they'd be fine and we wouldn't need to get them a girlfriend each if we didn't want to! Phew! Going from 2 rabbits to 4 would have been a stretch, LOL, and the cost of the insurance alone would have been a problem along with everything else!

So, we've bought an additional hutch which is waiting to be made up...but now our annual visit from the mining bees seems to be starting - a little later than the past few years, probably because of the chill and the rain! There's no way the kids - or I, LOL - will clean out two hutches surrounded by mining bees! If you haven't heard of them you're not alone - my 91 year old dad had never heard of them before we moved here! If you haven't seen one before, they look just like wasps! And as wasps sting for no reason, it's hard to get the risk of being surrounded by what look like wasps out of your head! Actually there's very little risk - mining bees are very placid, and, as they tunnel up and down through the soil, they're used to be being in confined spaces. So even getting one up your trouser leg as I did last year, won't result in a sting! Unlike a wasp! Mining bees are not protected in the UK, and I read they're not even much use for pollinating, so it's rather frustrating to give up our whole garden for 6 weeks each year at this time...but also something quite special!

So the rabbits will go into their hutches in the conservatory and then once our visitors have left they'll be out in the garden in the new 15'x6' enclosure we made for them during the summer! Hopefully we won't get a harsh winter or it will only be a couple of months and they'll be back in the conservatory again!

So, less chat from me, LOL, and here's the artwork, with my thoughts as I prepared to create!

September Week 1 - Equipped for Life
This is actually the second piece I created for this week's devotional! The first piece, well, I really didn't have any idea what to create and it was more of a playing with techniques than making art, I feel. I do like it but it didn't feel as 'from the heart' as I'd have liked. So I'm going to keep that, maybe work on it some more, and maybe its time will come later in the month!
Having left that first piece alone for a few days, I found myself with some creating time and so took another look at the Bible verses I'd written out from the first study. Immediately an image came to me, so clear, that I sat down and created this straight off! Wow!

The verses that especially inspired this image were:
Isaiah 54:10 - "Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
and 2 Peter 1:3 - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.
and finally Romans 9:4 - They are God's people; he made them his children and revealed his glory to them; he made his covenants with them and gave them the Law; they have the true worship; they have received God's promises.
This is so much more what I wanted to create originally! It has much more of a family, loving and loved feel to it, I think. I used 4 or 5 different textures in this and have decided to set myself a little challenge of using those same textures within each piece this month and see how far I can stretch them to work in different ways! I like the way these textures interacted to give quite an old fashioned look to the piece, so I hope I can achieve that each week!
As well as the various CU textures, I used CU brushes and digital images from His Kingdom Come of course! I just clipped one of the background textures to each figure to give the appearance of silhouetted figures which are part of their surroundings. Very slight blur added to them to take off the sharp edges and give the impression of distance.
Really enjoyed myself with this piece!

Take Me Deeper - August Week 4

Wow another week has sped by without me seeing it! I was so inspired by one in particular of Diane Mara's videos showing  how she created a page with watercolour crayons, that I actually bought some myself...along with a few stamps and other bits and pieces! So at some time in the near future I shall become a mixed media gal and be once more playing with paint and ink on real paper! My youngest was so inspired also that she wants to play too! I think we know what our Art studies will consist of once the home edding year starts in just over a week! For now though, here's my digital piece for this final week of August! It's rather different but I like it and feel it makes a good summing up page.

August Week 4
 - Peace of God, God of Peace

Having done all the suggested reading, I think it was Hebrews 13:20-21 that stood out for me most:
May the God of peace provide you with every good thing you need in order to do his will, and may he, through Jesus Christ, do in us what pleases him.

I had absolutely no ideas for my artwork! Then I looked up at the plain wooden cross I have hanging above my computer screen and the idea came to me to use that image alone with the feeling of peace from last week's piece!

It's against a background of dark, scratchy, brutality that can sometimes be this world, with dark coloured birds and flames to complete that image. The white birds represent peace and are in front of the cross, closer to us. There are three of course!

So there we have it! A relatively simple piece - the b/g made from a few textures blended with some brushwork for the splats, the fire and the birds. A custom shape to create the cross, with a bevel added, and then last week's image clipped to it. Created the hole and the chain links myself with a CU layer style added to them.

Not sure if it feels a bit dark but after the past couple of weeks, I think I needed to display the rest of the world as a dark and brooding place, with Christ's peace a bright light of happiness in stark contrast!

Take Me Deeper - August Week 3

As the school summer holidays seem to be passing way too quickly, we've been super busy with house decoration and garden reorganisation and decoration...the past week it seems there just haven't been enough hours in the day! So, here it is, my August Week 3 Take Me Deeper response! You can find the class HERE at His Kingdom Come if you'd like to join in!

August Week 3 - Put It Into Practice
Continuing with this month's nature theme for the art, I chose to make a piece depicting the kind of place we like to go walking! Inspired by photos taken last year of a forest covered in bluebells, I embellished a little more lol!
I think getting myself out and closer to nature is the fastest and best way for me to feel and keep feeling thankfulness! I really feel closer to God even just sitting in my garden under our big tree! As I tend to hide away indoors from the sun and heat in summer, I know I definitely need to get out there more at present!
The readings that really spoke to me were:
Romans 12:2 - Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God - what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.
Ephesians 5:20 - In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.
Colossians 2:6-7 - Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him.
Colossians 3:12-17 was also so meaningful, perhaps particularly the verses...You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
It reminded me of Week 1 and the grass being 'clothed' with the wild flowers - so I added in more wild flowers to the 'bluebells' in my piece to represent my attempts to clothe myself with these attributes! Then just added in a few butterflies to represent transformation.
Four CU textures and a load of CU brushwork!

Take Me Deeper - August Week 2

I seriously cannot believe I'm typing 'August Week 2' here! - the year seems to be flying by! It seems only a short time ago that we started this year long project and I was praying that I'd manage to keep up! Each time I upload a new piece of art I look back and see how many weeks have gone by, and each one has some artwork to represent it! Wow! That makes me so happy!

If you'd like to join us in the Take Me Deeper Class - or rejoin if you perhaps started but aren't up to date! - and it's never too late to start! - you can find the class HERE at His Kingdom Come!

For now though, I think it's time for the artwork! I particularly like this piece...as usual each week I'm amazed by what flows forth from my pen!

August Week 2 - Think About Such Things
Am loving the devotionals and the personal testimonies - I'm finding myself identifying with a LOT!

I did the suggested readings. I'd decided that I wanted to try and create a set of nature-themed pieces for this month as nature is one of the things that really beings home feelings of thankfulness and peace and joy to me.

Perhaps because of this Psalm 95 vv1-5 really spoke to me at first:
Come, let us praise the Lord!
Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us!
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and sing joyful songs of praise.
For the Lord is a mighty God,
a mighty king over all the gods.
He rules the deepest caves to the highest hills.
He rules over the sea, which he made;
The land also, which he himself formed.

I just started reading through the Psalms and noting lines that jumped out at me:
Psalm 107 v.43
...consider the Lord's constant love

Psalm 118 v.28
You are my God, and I give you thanks; I will proclaim your greatness.

Psalm 136 v.26
Give thanks to the God of heaven, his love is eternal

Psalm 104:
v.3: You use the clouds as your chariot and ride on the wings of the wind.

v.4: You use the winds as your messengers and flashes of lightning as your servants.
v.12: In the trees nearby the birds make their nests and sing.
v.13: From the sky you send rain on the hills,
and the earth is filled with your blessings.

v.24: Lord, you have made so many things!
How wisely you made them all!

I toyed with the idea of a seascape or a tree scene but then the image of cow parsley came to me. I couldn't find the photo I had in my head that I took a few years ago now, of the plant, dried, and standing proud against the blue sky background, so I had to recreate it from memory!

The cow parsley is a bit stylised but I like the effect and hopefully it's recognisable!! The way the plant stands tall and stretches towards the sun and when filled with the white flowers looks so pretty and happy always inspires me!
Lots of CU textures and brushes used as well as CU edges!

Take Me Deeper - August Week 1

Trying to get back to some normality after recent weeks' events with the rabbits and their sufferings! I'm so pleased to be creating again! It's school holidays now and so my time seems to be cut even shorter, but I managed this piece in a couple of hours!

August Week 1 - Thankful in ALL things.

When I saw what the theme for August was going to be I was really pleased as it felt like just what I needed! Then, of course, I came across the word 'joyful'!

For some reason I really struggle with that word when relating it to myself! I just don't feel that I'm a joyful person! I have fun, happiness, love, faith  but just can't make that leap to seeing myself as joyful! No idea why! Maybe I've just got this image in my head of a joyful person laughing and leaping into the air with gay abandon and I'm more of an introvert and sedate type.
But on reading Phil. 4:4-9 it came to me that being joyful could perhaps not only be about outward and obvious signs of joy but also about the asking God for what we need, asking with a thankful heart, not worrying and having our hearts and minds kept safe by God's peace. Inward signs and experiences and actions constituting joyfulness. A quieter, unseen kind of joy. Mmm I'm still working that around in my head!

So, I felt I might struggle a bit to represent joyful in my art - really feel it, I mean. Still, I pressed on!

I did the suggested reading and found Ephesians 5:15-20  really meaningful. Probably because of the ongoing situation in our Parish but also because of recent events with an online stalker (for want of a better term):
So be careful how you live. Don't live like ignorant people, but like wise people. Make good use of every opportunity you have, because these are evil days. Don't be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do. Do not get drunk with wine, which will ruin you; instead be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.

When it came to the art I drew a blank and then recalled Matthew 6: 28-30 which mentions the grass being clothed and the wild flowers. Which gave me the idea for this piece. I really hope it has a feeling of joyfulness within it as well as thankfulness! The wild flowers raising their heads to the light, growing from the darkness and still with some darkness around, but ever stretching upwards!

Two CU textures used along with a lot of (CU) brushwork.

Take Me Deeper - July Week 5

July Week 5 - Honour Ourselves

To sum up the month and also represent all the different ways in which we should honour ourselves and so honour God, I used three of HKC's Praise Him digital figures.

This month's pieces have been so intuitive and have just seemed to leap off the page each time once I started up Photoshop! It's been a very different way of working and I've loved every minute!
On this piece I also used my own papers, plus CU brushes and borders.

Take Me Deeper - July Week 4

July Week 4 - Honour Others
I tried to illustrate the many parts by using the HKC Praise Him digital figures showing one lifting up another. I had to play around with one of the figures to change the attitude of the arms and feet, by selecting, duplicating, moving and warping - that was fun!

When I started adding the white light, shapes within the b/g paper started suggesting what was to become almost an outline to represent the world and all its people. I went on, adding colours to represent honour and glory as well as suggest the earth and the varied people we have all around!
The papers are all mine, and I also used CU brushes and borders.

Take Me Deeper - July Week 3

Well, life rather took me over recently, what with our little bunnies having operations that didn't happen quite as planned and instead of needing 3-4 days recovery before being back to normal, it's been 3 weeks and still going now! The poor little things have really been through the mill and it's amazing they've come through as well as they have. Hopefully things are headed in the right direction now though and pretty soon they can go back in their cage and life can return to some normality!

So, playing catch up with my postings, here is my July Week 3 piece!

July Week 3 - Honour God
I tried to create a piece that summed up the ways in which we honour God...bowing down before him in the different ways mentioned.
I added a little glow coming from her heart to show that yes, she really does honour Him completely. That was inspired by the given verses of Matthew 15:7-9 when Jesus says: "...Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 'These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"
I'm loving using the Praise Him digital images from HKC! The papers are all mine, and I used CU brushes and borders.

Digital Faith Art Group Challenge - July Week 1

You can find the challenge details HERE! I had a great time making my own paper! I used 7 CU textures with a photo of mine of hydrangea flowers. Then I used the Find Edges and Watercolour filters plus a bit of blur and then blended the photo into the paper I'd created. Love the effect! Then just used some CU texture brushes to create 'birds', following the lines within the colours on the paper. Had a great time on this challenge!

Take me Deeper - July Week 2

I honestly had so much fun making this page! I seem to be finding a new style, freer, which I love! I'm sure there will be more pieces in this style!

July Week 2 - Cultivating Honour

I did the word search and the predominant words were love one another - which would seem to sum up the way we need to live to honour God and also each other.

So I wanted an image that spoke those words! No ideas of course! So I started playing with the HKC Praise Him digital images and resized, warped and even cut off an arm and moved it around to form the impression I wanted! I can't believe how quickly this came together! It seemed too simple at first; too easy, but I soon realised that nothing else was needed or would work so this is how it stays!

Arms wrapped around each other, these 2 live in love together. With one arm raised in worship, they both live in love of God. They are both enveloped in the light of God and I hope a feeling of joy as well as love comes through!

Other than the HKC Praise Him image, I used my own papers, plus CU brushes and edges.

His Kingdom Come Digital Faith Art Challenge

OK, so this was June Week 4's challenge and I'm a few days later but never mind!
You can find all the challenges HERE! Why not have a play...there are some good techniques to try!

For this challenge, I wasn't able to use the liquify tool as I have RAM issues so I just had to try and warp the ribbon into an acceptable shape!

All stash used was created by me.

Inspired Digital Artwork

These are two pieces I made this morning and are part of my 'Inspired' Collection!

Not really sure where these pieces came from! This morning I just looked at the dog's bed and the creases and folds looked like human forms! So I snapped a pic on my phone and used that as a starting point!
For 'Guardian' I added a texture, duplicated a couple of times with different blending modes, and then digitally painted the shapes to highlight the suggestion of form. Then I added various other textures and adjustment layers until I got something I was happy with!

'Prayer'
was created from the 'Guardian' piece. Then I added lots of brushwork, with loads of different blend modes, over the top to make it a more painterly piece.

I had a very relaxing and fulfilling time creating these!

Take Me Deeper - July Week 1

Wow, can you believe it's July already?! We have had temperatures up into the 30s this week which has made even ordinary tasks seems like a slog! (I'm one of those pale people who burn in just 5 minutes in the sun and just can't 'do' heat and humidity!). I'm hoping for a big thunder storm very soon to break this humidity and freshen things up a bit! Not to mention the gardens need a good soaking!

My artwork for this first week in July came together so simply, it all seems a bit strange! I purchased the Praise Him Digital Images from His Kingdom Come - have a look in their store as they have great stuff for digital artists and for actual paint on paper artists! So much so I'm seriously considering setting up all my paints and inks etc again somehow after several years of being only digital just to use their stuff!! The digital images just seemed to inspire me so much! I'm looking forward to seeing more of them hit the store!

So, here's what I made!

July Week 1 - Independence v. Dependence

Having looked up the definitions of various words was really interesting! Especially perhaps because some of the definitions of vulnerable are not things generally thought of as positive! Plus, it was so positive listening to the Podcasts, especially with all the negativity and upset within my Parish at present! I had an unexpected hour to myself and really enjoyed listening whilst browsing the HKC Store! All in all it really inspired me!

My inspiration for this piece was Psalm 8:1-2 - Your praise reaches up to the heavens; it is sung by children and babies.

This month's artwork will be slightly different as I decided to use the Praise Him digital images each week. I really enjoyed the first one! I had intended to use as it came but played around and added some nuance of shape and tone and loved it!

The b/g papers are all mine, with a CU border and a bit of CU brush work.

Friday, 26 June 2015

Well, it's been a busy week this week! Two days I had road trips to take others places I'd not been before! Yesterday (Thursday) the girls and I were so whacked after Wednesday's excursion that we had a pyjama day! Don't think I've ever done that before on a Mon-Fri day lol but I obviously needed it as feel much more 'alive' today! I keep telling myself it's just part of taking care of me lol!
So here is my offering for this last week of June! I really enjoyed creating this piece!
June Week 4 - The Family of God
Having done all the suggested reading, just two really called to me. Firstly Ephesians 1:18-20:
I ask that your minds may be opened to see his light, so that you will know what is the hope to which he has called you, how rich are the wonderful blessings he promises his people, and how very great is his power at work in us who believe. This power working in us is the same as the mighty strength which he used when he raised Christ from death and seated him at his right side in the heavenly world.
Then Galatians 3:26 - It is through faith that all of you are God's children in union with Christ Jesus.
I had absolutely no idea what kind of image to create, so gave up thinking about it and started reading more of The Creative Call, HKC's Book Club current fare. The page I opened up quoted from Genesis and that reminded me that that was where I had started at the beginning of June!
It seemed fitting and really appealed to me to try and illustrate Genesis 1:1-3 - In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water. Then God commanded, "Let there be light" - and light appeared.
This really fired my imagination, and just seemed so appropriate as it seems to me, this was the start of family - and with all the nasty politics of separation nowadays, it seems so hard for so many people to remember that we are all one world, one human family spread across the whole earth, and we all, along with all of God's creation were created to be together on this planet.
Sometimes what is lacking in a family is made up for from friends, even people we don't know sometimes, and of course, God as our Father loves and watches over us all.
So! This is my piece! Darkness over the seas becoming light. The Spirit represented with a stylised dove shape and wispy trails. Bit of artistic license with the suggestion of mountains in the b/g lol but it worked better! I tried the finished piece in black and white and actually liked it but thought it needed to be in cheery colours to give a more positive feel to it. So there we have it! Lots of brush work and a couple of textures!
